Taking advice to rural communities

Thank's to your donations during the Christmas Challenge 2018 we raised over £4,900 to fund a specialist Citizens Advice rural adviser including a matching donation from the Reed Foundation.

You may be aware that Citizens Advice Purbeck is your local charity providing free, confidential and impartial advice on a wide range of topics to Purbeck residents. Whilst many people access our service via drop-in sessions in Wareham, Swanage, Bovington, Upton and Lytchett Matravers, we are seeing increased referrals for those who find it hard to get to these outreaches and require home visits.

As a result, we are trying to raise additional funds to support a specialist adviser to visit people disadvantaged by isolation, poverty and disability in rural parts of Purbeck.

Need

A rural district, Purbeck is relatively disadvantaged in public transport provision thereby limiting access to advice services at our 5 outreaches. 34% of households have no access to an hourly bus service. 26% people are aged over 65 compared to 19.5% nationally.
We have received increasing numbers of referrals from social workers and district nurses.
Unable to access face to face advice, residents are not always receiving all welfare benefit entitlements to to live healthy, independent lives.

Solution

This project will fund a Specialist Welfare Benefits Adviser to offer two home visits per week and related casework to people who are disadvantaged because of isolation, poverty or disability (including mental health issues). We will help with welfare benefit applications and appeals, and income maximisation. We will also look at other forms of support which may be relevant, such as local grant schemes, food banks or other charitable support. This project minimises rural disadvantage.

Future Proof Youth Project

Thank's to your donations during the Christmas Challenge 2017 we raised over £4,500 to fund a specialist Citizens Advice youth adviser including a matching donation of £1200 from the Four Acre Trust (www.fouracretrust.org.uk).

These valuable funds are already being put to work - our youth adviser has established weekly sessions at Wareham Youth Club to help a group of 15-16 year olds develop financial capability. The timetable includes practical sessions on budgeting, dealing with tenancy and home ownership, understanding the cost of living, and more...

Research & Campaigns

The stories our clients tell us make us aware of the problems faced by people in our community and all over the UK.

Citizens Advice collects evidence of clients' problems and uses this to campaign for changes in national and local policies and services. We have a key role in speaking up for clients, raising issues brought to us, contributing to public debate and informing legislation.

Our research and campaign work covers a huge range of issues including consumer, debt, housing, benefits, immigration, employment, legal matters and health. We work with policy makers, regulators, MPs, Assembly Members and service providers. Read more...
